Homework: Simple Machines

Last time Ms. Eyer came to our classroom, we talked about different types of simple machines. Check out this activity on Edheads.com or research other simple machines on askkids.com. In the comments section, give 3 or 4 examples of simple machines. Try to come up with different responses than your classmates.

Hi, Ms. Stern. It's Carly again.
One example of a machine in my house is a toaster. It has a lever that that we push down. When the toast is ready, the lever inside makes the toast pop up! Another machine is my bicycle. It has wheels that turn, pedals and a chain that help it run. Our electric mixer is also a machine. The twirlers turned and turned to mix my birthday cake!! Yum. It was yummy!

Hi Ms. Stern. We are also thinking of simple machines in our house. My sisters light is a simple machine, it works like a pulley, you pull the chain and the light turns on and off. The light in my room is also a simple machine. I push down the switch, like a lever, to turn the light on and push it up to turn it off. I also like to ride a scooter, that has 2 wheels to make it go. My bathtub drains water after I take my bath like an inclined plane.

Ms. Stern's Class in Room 66, listen up!
Simple machines make work easier for us by allowing us to push or pull over increased distance!
You are right that wheels are a simple machine and about the water draining out of the bathtub using an inclined plane! Keep thinking....
Try taking this quiz:

Good Luck!

Hi Miss Stern,

The handle for my bedroom door is a simple machine. It is a lever that has to be pulled up or down to open or close the door.
A saw is a simple machine too. It acts like a wedge to cut wood into pieces. My Dad used a saw to make my tree house!

Hi Ms. Stern,

This is Joshua. I am thinking hard about simple machines. I think a stapler is a wedge or a lever. I think my clock has gears to make it work. The laptop is a lever when it goes up and down. This one was a little hard for me.

Good night.

Hi Ms.Stern

Our panini maker is a simple machine. It works by pushing it down and pulling it up. It makes the best grilled cheese sandwich!

The wooden blinds in my kitchen is also a simple machine. They work by a pulley.

good night

Hi,
Ms.Stern, a faucet
handle is a lever
because you turn
it back to turn it off,
and you turn it forward
to turn it on.

Love, Sophia

I have the smartest class! I'm curious how you're all finding your answers. Looking around the house? Using one of the websites? Reading a book?

Is anyone ready to take Ms. Eyer's quiz that she posted?

Sweet dreams! See you in the morning.

Love,
Ms. Stern

Hi Ms. Stern:

Another simple machine in our home is the clock. Clocks tell us the time. It has a big hand to tell the hours and a small hand to tell the minutes. A clock has 12 numbers and some go tick tock. Other clocks act as a radio and an alarm. Clocks come in many sizes and my clock is white. I am never late for school because I have a clock in my room to tell me the time.

See you tomorrow Ms. Stern,

Ms. Stern:

A simple machine in our house (and I bet your house too) is the toilet paper roll. It is a wheel on an axl.
