Homework: Earth Day
We have been talking about ways that we try to help the Earth in our classroom. We recycle plastic water bottles, we reuse water bottles, turn the lights off when we leave the room, reuse extra school papers for drawing, and reduce the amount of paper by emailing. Many families are already doing lots of helpful things to reduce, reuse, and recycle at home as well. As we have discussed, the only way we can protect the Earth is to get the people who live here to practice good environmentally friendly habits and to replace bad habits with better ones. Check out this website made by first graders in Westchester. Or research other ideas about Earth Day and taking care of our environment here. What is something new that you and your family will commit to changing or start doing to take care of the Earth? I can't wait to read your responses!

Hi Ms. Stern... It's Carly Reiner.
Our family recyles EVERY DAY at home and wherever we go. Something new that our family and our class can do is to put a jug outside to collect rain water. We can water our plants in our home and at school with the rain water... What do you think?
Hi Ms Stern. Anthony Cosimano read the earth day blog tonight. We also recycle everyday and never litter. Anthony wants to follow Carly's suggestion to help water our plants. He thinks that is a great idea! Anthony and his sister, Olivia, would like to help out the environment and pick up litter when they take walks.
Carly and Anthony,
It's so great to hear that you both recycle every day and not just for Earth Day! I like your idea about collecting rain water to use with the plants. I once read that some people use dish water (the water used when washing dishes in the sink) to water plants as well.
Anthony and Olivia,
Walks are good exercise, great fun, and excellent times to pick up litter that others may have left behind. Hope you don't find too much stuff!
Great job!
Ms. Stern
Zoe is going to teach her brother not to let the water run when he is brushing his teeth. We will try to drive less by combining many trips into one when we can.

Zoe
Hi Ms. Stern,
We recycle our paper, glass, and plastics everyday. We also make sure all the lights are turned off if we are not in the room. We take short showers to save water and money. We use the recycled paper to draw, or do homework on instead of new paper. We reuse plastic bags from the store and we recycle those when we are finished. One way that Michael will commit to being earth friendly is to keep planting flowers and plant a tree in our backyard. From, Michael
Hi Ms. Stern
We like to go on walks to the pier and pick up litter.
We also recycle at home, I am in charge of putting plastic in the recycle bin.
We also save egg shells and coffee grinds for our garden, it helps the plants grow.
Chow
Ms Stern
