We started the day with extra P.E. We bowled. Sammy, Nolan, and Joshua each got a strike. Isabella got two spares! If no pins were knocked down, it’s called a gutter ball. If all of the pins get knocked down on the second turn, that’s called a spare. Michael went for a split. It’s when 2 pins are separate from each other. The only way to get the split is to make one pin slide and knock the other one down. He was able to knock down 1 of the pins.

We went to music today. We played instruments like jingle bells, egg shakers, triangles, maracas, drums, and rhythm sticks. Mrs. Fox read There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow. We played the instruments at different times to go along with different words in the story.

Today is the Chinese New Year. We read 2 books about it. We learned that red is a lucky color. Oranges and tangerines are eaten for good luck. People clean their homes to sweep away bad fortune. 2009 is the Year of the Ox. Most of us were born in 2002. That was the Year of the Horse.

We got to watch the kindergarteners march in the parade this afternoon. They made masks and lanterns that they made. Many children were wearing red, which is the color for good luck. We sat against the wall. We wished the parade marchers “Gung hay fat choy.”

In Writer’s Workshop, we are beginning to prepare to publish our second piece of writing from our personal narrative unit. The stories are all memoirs or small moments. Our first task is to reread all of our writing and choose the best piece. We reviewed all of the things that we learned in this unit as well as the important ideas from the launching unit. Tomorrow we will begin selecting.

Our first Charlie Caps party will take place on Thursday! Everyone is allowed to bring in one stuffed animal to celebrate. Also, we will be having an ice cream party in the afternoon. All of the boys and girls in the class helped to make this party happen!

Inauguration Day: Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Today was Inauguration Day! We went into the cafeteria to watch President Obama get sworn in. Before that, we saw Vice President Biden get sworn in. We also watched a singer named Aretha Franklin sing My Country Tis of Thee. There were many people who went to Washington D.C. to take part in this special event. Zoe thought it was cool because it was the first time she got to watch a new president take office. Mia and Nolan were surprised that Obama became our president. They were surprised (in a good way) because all of the other presidents had light skin. When we were learning about Martin Luther King Jr. last week, we realized that people are different and people are the same. The parts that make us different from each other don’t mean that they’re bad, or right, or wrong. It was frustrating and sad to learn that it used to be okay to treat people differently because of the color of their skin. We all agreed that we feel proud to live in a country where people are now treated fairly and equally. After watching the swearing in and inaugural speech, it was time for lunch!

In music, we read a story called I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow and then we played freeze dance.

We went to the library today. Mr. Tanenbaum wasn’t there because he was in Washington D.C. We looked on his blog this morning. Mrs. Edler read us a story called Henry’s Freedom Box. We also read the Gingerbread Baby. Carly and Kaitlyn listened to A Chair for My Mother using headphones. Then everyone who brought their books back got to have book exchange.

The class read Time for Kids. It was all about life inside of the White House. We learned that there are 13 bedrooms, 7 bedrooms, and 3 kitchens. There is also a special place called the Oval Office, where the president does his work. We talked about how the families are different and alike us. Many of us like to do lots of similar kinds of things just like the first children do.

This morning we did spelling sentence dictations again. Ms. Stern passed out the papers from Tuesday first for us to see how we did, looking carefully at the things we did right and also pay attention to the mistakes that we made so that we can concentrate on fixing them. Most children felt that they did better on today’s dictations than Tuesday’s.

Next, we finished working on our New Year’s Resolutions. A resolution is something that you want to change (for the better) in your life. It might be to stop a bad habit or to start a good one. Here are some of our resolutions:

My New Year’s Resolution is to stop fighting with my brother. –Carly
My New Year’s Resolution is to stop picking my nose. –Mia
My New Year’s Resolution is to stop pulling my pants down. –Joshua
My New Year’s Resolution is to start raising my hand. –Isabella
My New Year’s Resolution is to stop playing my DS so much. –Nolan
My New Year’s Resolution is to stop being bad in my house. -Emily
My New Year’s Resolution is to stop picking my nose. -Michael
My New Year’s Resolution is to stop fighting with my cousin. –Axl
My New Year’s Resolution is to stop jumping off of the couch. –Bartosz
My New Year’s Resolution is to play more sports. –Darren
My New Year’s Resolution is to stop jumping on my bed. -Kevin

We had library this morning. Ms. Eyer passed out dictionaries for us to share with a partner. Everyone was asked to make observations about what they noticed. We discovered that there are pictures (including a section with pictures of all of the presidents), words in bold print, and colors for each of the letters on the side. Then we practiced putting things in alphabetical order on the Smartboard. First we practiced with letters, then words, then pictures of animals, and finally we used our names. Afterwards, we were able to have book exchange.

In gym, we practiced the Blue dance for the dance festival. We also played games with the parachute. Mia got to go in the middle. We used balls to pop up just like popcorn on top of the parachute.

This afternoon, we continued practicing writing good sentences. We realized that sentences MUST have three things: an uppercase letter at the beginning; a period or punctuation mark at the end; a complete thought that makes sense (and includes a naming and a telling part). We practiced sorting sentences from phrases on the Smartboard. This week we have worked together to create ONE good sentence that matched a picture. Then we came up with a sentence that we wrote and cut up on a sentence strip. We even got to switch with a partner and have them put it in order. Today, we wrote 2-3 sentences about another picture. Ms. Stern and Mrs. Barsanti were looking to see who remembered to include all of the things that we’ve been working on. Next, we’re going to try to remember to include these ideas in our writing!
